What it actually is

The zodiac divides the Sun's apparent yearly path into twelve equal thirty-degree segments. Your Sun sign is simply which of those twelve the Sun was passing through at your birth. It is an astronomical position, and it is the same for everyone born within roughly the same month-long window.

That last point is why a Sun sign alone can only ever be a broad description: about a twelfth of everyone alive shares yours. What makes it specific is what it is read alongside.

What it describes

Traditionally the Sun describes the core drive — what you are moving toward, what you want to be recognised for, the thing that feels most like yourself when everything else is stripped away. Not your habits, not your mood, not how you come across at a party. Those belong to other placements.

Read this way, a Sun sign is much less deterministic and much more useful. It is a statement about direction and motive, not personality traits on a list.

Dates shift by a day either way depending on the year, which is why a chart is computed from your actual date rather than looked up on a poster.

Why the Sun sign is never read alone

Every sign carries an element, a modality and a ruling planet, and those three do most of the real work. Two Fire signs behave nothing alike if one is cardinal and the other fixed. A sign ruled by Saturn and a sign ruled by Venus want different things even when they share an element.

A reading that stops at "you are a Leo" has told you almost nothing. A reading that says which kind of fire, moving in which way, under which planet — and then sets that against your Life Path and Soul Urge — is describing one person.
