The Four Elements

Fire — Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

Fire is initiative and heat. Fire signs move first and think about it in motion. They are motivated by what could be rather than what is, and they lose interest in a thing the moment it stops being alive. Their strength is momentum; their cost is that momentum is hard to steer and expensive to maintain.

A fire person under strain does not go quiet. They go faster.

Earth — Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

Earth is substance and consequence. Earth signs want to know what a thing weighs, what it costs, and whether it will still be there next year. They build slowly and they build things that hold. Their strength is that they finish; their cost is that they can defend a structure long after it stopped serving them.

An earth person under strain does not panic. They dig in.

Air — Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

Air is pattern and exchange. Air signs live in the space between things — conversation, comparison, ideas held at a slight distance so they can be turned over. Their strength is perspective; their cost is that distance can become a way of never quite arriving.

An air person under strain does not act. They analyse.

Water — Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Water is depth and feeling. Water signs take in more than they report — atmosphere, undercurrent, what someone meant rather than said. Their strength is that they know things before there is evidence; their cost is that they carry what they absorb, often without meaning to.

A water person under strain does not argue. They withdraw and feel it all the way through.

Elements in combination

Element compatibility is real but frequently oversimplified. Fire and air genuinely feed each other — air gives fire something to burn, fire gives air somewhere to go. Earth and water genuinely nourish each other — water gives earth life, earth gives water a shape to hold.

The harder pairings are not doomed; they are simply working in different materials, and they need to know it. Most of the friction in a mismatched pairing comes from each person assuming the other is being difficult on purpose rather than being made of something else.
