Ruling Planets

Each sign has a planet standing behind it, and that planet is where the sign's motive actually comes from. Knowing the ruler is often the fastest way to understand why a sign wants what it wants.

Why the ruler matters

The ruling planet explains motive where the sign only describes behaviour. A Capricorn is not simply "ambitious" — a Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, and Saturn is about time and cost. That is a different and much more accurate thing: not a person who wants more, but a person who is unusually aware of what everything actually takes.

The same correction works everywhere. Venus explains why Taurus and Libra, an earth sign and an air sign, both care so much about what is worth having. Mercury explains why Gemini and Virgo both take things apart, one in conversation and one in detail.

Traditional and modern rulers

Before the outer planets were discovered, Scorpio was ruled by Mars, Aquarius by Saturn and Pisces by Jupiter. Many astrologers still read both — the modern ruler for the sign's character, the traditional one for its mechanics. Neither is wrong; they are answering slightly different questions.
