How it is calculated
There is no calculation. If you were born on the 23rd, your Birthday Number is 23. If you were born on the 4th, it is 4. Some traditions reduce two-digit days to a single digit; the more useful reading keeps the full day, because 23 and 5 describe genuinely different gifts even though 2 + 3 = 5.

Why such a small number matters
Because it is narrow. The Life Path describes a whole road and the Expression Number a whole toolkit — both are large, and large descriptions are easy to nod along to. The Birthday Number names one thing. It is usually the detail in a reading that people recognise instantly and slightly uncomfortably, because it is too specific to be flattering by accident.
